Best Times to Feed a Husky
Siberian Husky Feeding Guidelines
Siberian Husky is known for its loving and playful nature. Despite of their large size, they don't require a heavy diet. But, because they are working dogs, they certainly need a special diet. Knowing the eating habits of huskies, best foods for them and their feeding schedule is very important for a responsible husky owner.
Eating Habits of Siberian Huskies:
Eating habits of this dog are very different from other dogs. Unlike other dogs, Huskies keep an eye on the food intake and they are not greedy when it comes to food. A husky will not eat if he is not hungry even if he has access to food. However, a husky will eat more if he is exercising more.
Since these dogs were bred to work in harsh conditions where food was not easily available, they have a high metabolism and know how to use nutrients. Feeding quality food to the Siberian between 2-9 months is very important as this is the main growth phase for this dog.
Meal Frequency:
Generally, a husky should be fed three times when he is a puppy. With time, he will automatically switch to two meals per day.
If you will provide the access of the food to the dog all day, it won't harm as huskies don't eat like other dogs. While other dogs eat until they fall ill, huskies will not eat when they are full. A husky should be fed at least two hours before the exercise as he won't be able to exercise with a filled stomach. Similarly, wait for at least 30 minutes after the exercise to feed him otherwise gastric torsion may happen.
Nutrition Check:
Siberian Huskies should be fed a nutritious diet, and therefore it is very important to feed him only premium dog feed or quality home cooked food. Ideally, the good dog food should contain protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and good fats for overall growth and good immunity of the dog. Different meats such as lamb, fish, and chicken are good sources of quality proteins.
Vegetables should be fed to the dog for providing him different vitamins and minerals.
What kind of diet is recommended for Siberian Huskies?
A husky can eat raw as well as commercial dry and wet food. However, it is not recommended to feed him both the foods in the same meal as both take different times to digest. While feeding raw food such as chicken, beef, lamb, fish, fruits, and vegetables to the dog is healthy; keeping him on a commercial diet costs you less. Also, commercial dog food is easier to food, store and has a longer life.
What to do if my dog is bored with the food?
There may be various reasons behind it. May be you are feeding him the same meal everyday and he has become bored with the food. You can feed him something which doesn't eat regularly after the food to get rid of this problem. Offering him few pieces of meat or cheese will work.
